Alteras de Familia

On Sunday, Nov. 1, thousands will gather at Central Park at Mill Creek and the Bakersfield Museum of Art for the seventh annual Altares de Familia and Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration – an event that brings families, friends and the community together to pray for and remember loved ones who have died and help support their spiritual journey.

Dia de los Muertos, is a Hispanic tradition that dates back to Aztec times where the festivities were dedicated to the goddess known as La Calavera Catrina, or Dapper Skeleton.

The tradition has been kept alive in Bakersfield thanks to local organizations like the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Bakersfield Museum of Art, this years organizers.

Most of the museums garden will be adorned with family altars, each paying tribute to their loved ones in their own way. Not one altar is the same. Some have photos, food, and traditional vibrant art and even music playing in the background, while others have large photo collages and decorative tables.

Besides the altars, at Central Park at Mill Creek the festivities begin. Attendees can enjoy traditional Mexican food, cultural craft vendors, exhibitors booths, live entertainment, a children’s crafts area and traditional face painting booths.
Admission is $3 per person, children 6 and under are free. The event is from 4 to 8 p.m. at Central Park at Mill Creek and 1930 R St.

Temblor Event

Bakersfield’s new Temblor Brewing Company, Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce invite community to celebrate the release of new Mexican-style lager, ‘El Cerrito’

Temblor Brewing Company and the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce are inviting the community to celebrate the opening of Bakersfield’s newest brewery, and the release of the new El Cerrito Mexican-style lager with a ribbon cutting and beer tapping ceremony from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Temblor Brewing Company, 3200 Buck Owens Blvd.

The celebration will feature a mariachi, taco dinner and plenty of beer offerings for attendees, including El Cerrito. The new beer, which is Spanish for small hill, is a tribute to the large Hispanic population in Kern County. The beer name is also a play on words on the Temblor mountain range, Spanish for earthquake, in western Kern County.

“Join us to celebrate this thriving new business near downtown Bakersfield offering some of the finest beverages in Kern County,” said Jay Tamsi, president and CEO of the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

El Cerrito is a Mexican-style light lager with an ABV of 4.75 percent, and served in a “strange” glass. This style of beer originated in Europe and made its way to Mexico in the 1800s, where it became the beer style of choice in the country. Temblor’s style uses German malts and yeast, three German hops (Northern Brewer, Czech Saaz and Tettnang), and is clean, crisp and aged to perfection (over six weeks).

“We’re confident all Kern County residents, including those used to drinking Mexican style lagers, will love this new beer at Temblor,” said Don Bynum, Temblor CEO and president.
